Buttons Are Back

We've been revamping the hub pages on the site in order to make them more accessible across different browsers. Hopefully there will be improved compatibility with the Firefox and IE8 browsers now. As we've been working on this, we also brought back the cool wooden navigation buttons down the left side of each hub page. More updates are forthcoming so check in here or subscribe through your favorite RSS reader to keep up with the latest additions and tweaks.

DreamHost Goes Green

Green Hosting
Kudos to our hosting service for going green by purchasing Renewable Energy Credits and Carbon Credits to offset the environmental impact of their energy usage. (That's what the little button's all about; you may have seen it on our front page or on other sites.) You can read all about it at this page on the DreamHost site.

And There Was Much Rejoicing

We've made a couple of changes to the hub pages on the site which should allow them to load faster for you. Less waiting-around time means more time you can spend looking at what you came here to see, right? Enjoy!

Also, if you're looking for the old "Consciousness Expansion" section, it's been renamed to the "Think Tank." (We had to do something. Someone's consciousness expanded so much, it got too big for their brain.)

Now You Can Get Excited

We've had a couple of requests for this, so now there's an "Add to My Excite Mix" button over in the the "Subscribe" box. If your favorite RSS-reader or subscription service isn't listed, drop us a line and we'll see what we can do. If you want to subscribe but don't know anything about that sort of thing, I recommend the FeedBlitz option at the top of the box; it's free, it's easy, and it comes straight to your e-mail without getting you on a lot of annoying mailing lists you don't want.

P.S. BlogTop Sites is in the process of merging with BlogFlux, so if you're seeing a blank button where that should be in the subscription area, that's probably why. They hope to have things completed this weekend.

Spring Green

We're in the process of brightening up the site a bit with the colors of spring. Yes, I used the word "process," which means ongoing tinkering for awhile. But it shouldn't interfere with your browsing, so enjoy your visit.

Minor Tweaks

Made a couple of minor tweaks to address some formatting issues on the blog; if you're viewing it onsite rather than through a subscription service, this (should) put the navigation buttons up along the left side for everyone now instead of hanging around down at the bottom as they were doing in some cases. Also made a couple of minor adjustments to the front page, mainly in the area of the Google search bar.

"Brimstone Bites" Hijacked

Erin's blog has been hijacked by spam pirates, so if you've seen any peculiar entries floating around in the blogosphere that don't look like her usual rants and raves, that's why. We're attempting to save the archives so that you'll still be able to access them from our site. She'll be joining us here at the News & Updates blog instead of setting up a new one, so you can watch for future posts from her here.

Vote for Your Favorites

It's time for the 7th Annual Weblog Awards. There are lots of categories; you can cast your vote in as many or as few as you like.

We would never try to tell you who to vote for, of course, but our URL is http://www.gatewoodjournal.org/newsupdates.html ... you know, just in case you'd like to copy and paste it in there somewhere. :)

Cast your votes here: 2007.bloggies.com.

Breaking Out the Virtual Screwdriver

We've just made a couple of minor modifications to the coding for this section to deal with an RSS feed issue. I think it's fixed now.

More Ways to Get Gatewood

We've just added options for subscribing via Bloglines and Yahoo! You'll find the new buttons in the "Subscribe" box to the left. We're still testing out the links on our subscription services and made a couple of adjustments this evening; it appears that everything is working properly now.

Free Gatewood Subscriptions Available

We're happy to announce that we can now offer you the ability to subscribe to our "News & Updates" blog, which is where most of our new material is posted before it finds its way to a regular spot on our site. In addition to that, of course, we post notices of changes and updates to the site as well as interesting links, quotes and so on.

You'll find the subscription area over in the left-hand column below the navigation buttons. This service is offered through Feedblitz; it's free and they don't share your information or send you a lot of junk mail to clutter up your box. You'll get an e-mail in your box on days when we post an update (which is generally about once a week or so).

A New Leaf (or at Least a New Color for the Old Leaf)

It's autumn here in the Blue Ridge, so we've dressed up the site a bit to celebrate....

2007 Calendars Available

Our new 2007 calendars are now available in the gift shop. They feature a collage of photos and artwork from several of our artists and photographers, and will undoubtedly show more class and style than that centerfold thing your dorm-mate is planning to tack up on the closet. Get yours now at www.cafepress.com/gatewood. While you're there, be sure to check out our other new items, including postcards, magnets and license plate holders. And yes... in response to your requests, the collage from last year's calendar is now available on a t-shirt.

New Material from MacKenzie & Miller

A new piece added to our Wordscapes section:

"Safer" by F.X. MacKenzie.

Also, work is still in progress on P.L. Miller's Folio 3 but you can go ahead and sneak a peek now, if you like. Lots of great tree photos from the Blue Ridge area.

Just a Minor Glitch or Two

train wreckIf you've experienced difficulties getting to see various pages on our site recently, the situation is being remedied. To make a long story short, Dreamhost (the company who hosts our site) is located in Los Angeles, and some power outages there last month created some unanticipated difficulties. Fortunately, our site wasn't affected as badly as others, but they (and we) are still repairing some of the damages. You can help by letting us know if you run into a page that doesn't load completely; our webmaster has been checking our pages for missing sections since this happened, but if you happen to find something yourself, letting him know will get the problem addressed much more quickly. If you're interested in the far more technically-detailed version of the ongoing repairs, you can visit the Dreamhost weblog. Thanks for your patience.

You Are Not Hallucinating, Part 2 (Maybe You Are)

Our News & Updates blog has migrated from the front page to its own spot, this time powered by Blogger. If you think you see something else here, have a nap or a cup of coffee and check again later. Better yet, bookmark this page so you always know what our latest updates are. Before the week is out, we'll be adding a new section to the gallery. Stay tuned.

Erin's Blog Comes Home

If you've been reading Brimstone Bites over at Blogspot, we suggest updating your bookmark to her new spot here on our site: http://www.gatewoodjournal.org/erin.html. (It's fed to our page straight from Blogger, so you still have access to all her archives from here.)

You Are Not Hallucinating

We've moved our "News & Updates" section to the front page so you can see right away what's changed since your last visit. Of course, if that's not what you see here, you may very well be hallucinating. Alternate explanations not involving psychotic symptoms are also possible.

Site Updates

Our front page has a new look: new logo, plus easier-to-navigate links to those folks who've given us assistance and/or inspiration. We've also carried this link-box theme over to the other hub pages, hopefully making those links more navigable as well.
