It should go without saying that any work you wish to submit should be the best it can possibly be before you consider sending it. Photos that need "fixing" or writing that needs a great deal of editing or revisions are not likely to be considered. With that being said, below are some guidelines to help you prepare your work.
Writers:
Option #1. You may copy and paste your work into an e-mail to our online editor. Please don't send multiple submissions in the same e-mail; if you want to submit more than one item, make a separate e-mail for each one. Don't send file attachments unless we request them. Unsolicited e-mail with attachments will be deleted from the mailbox without being opened.
Option #2. You may mail us your work through the post office. Please include a SASE for return shipping. You may send a paper copy, CD, DVD, media card or USB jump drive. If you’re sending your work in digital format, your files should be compatible with MSWord, Notepad or Wordpad. Don't send your only copy, as we can't be responsible for loss or damage due to shipping.
In either case, if you prefer to query first, that's fine; we'll respond as soon as possible.
A couple of additional notes for writers...
We're not fanatical about double-spacing and margins, but we do prefer that you not send us work written out in longhand. Type it or print it out before you send it. Deciphering your handwriting is not part of the selection process. Talented as you may be, we're likely to move on to someone's work that we can read.
Also, while utilizing spell-check or grammar-check within your word-processing program is a good start, it is no substitute for taking the time to read your own work and make the necessary corrections before you submit it. Our editors will correct errors before publishing if your work is selected, but an article that is interesting, clearly written and does not need "fixing" is far more likely to be selected than one which instigates a discussion among our staff about phone-texting and the decline of the English language.
Artists & Photographers:
Before submitting, make sure you have your paperwork in order. If you're sending us photos that include a person as the subject, you'll need to send us a copy of the signed modeling release.
Option #1. Use an image storage service to upload a file of your image. Copy and paste the code into an e-mail to our online editor. You may copy and paste several image URLs into one
e-mail; it's not necessary to make a separate e-mail for each one. Don't send file attachments unless we request them. Unsolicited e-mail with attachments will be deleted from the mailbox without being opened.
Option #2. You may mail us a copy of your work through the post office. Please include a SASE for return shipping. Digital form (i.e., CD, DVD, media card, or USB jump drive) is preferable but you may also send a paper copy (i.e., photo print). If you're sending your images in digital form, your files should be JPG or TIF format. If you're sending a paper copy, use suitable mailing materials (e.g., stiff cardboard mailer); plain envelopes simply marked "Photos – Do Not Bend" are not likely to arrive in any condition to be properly evaluated. Don't send your original, negatives, or your only copy, as we can't be responsible for loss or damage due to shipping.
In either case, if you prefer to query first, that's fine; we'll respond as soon as possible.
